Throughout Q4 2024 and Q1 2025, the Maersk Design System team have worked closely with our colleagues in Branding, Marketing, the CMS team and third party agency Bold to understand what the ALL THE WAY brand refresh means for digitial products and the MDS.
When reviewing and contributing to this initiative, the MDS team kept the following in mind:
- Products using the MDS upgrade organically based on their own release cadence. Applications will not update simultaneous to reflect the brand refresh.
- Any updates to the existing Maersk themes must not introduce breaking changes.
- Updates to the Maersk themes must be as minimal as possible to ensure a seamless user experience when navigating between applications.
The following updates to the Maersk themes are planned for 2025:
- Our primary UI colour for components will be swapped from dark blue to black for the light theme and from Maersk blue to white for the dark theme.
- The secondary appearance button will become AAA accessible and approved for use in production. This will be achieved by keeping the Maersk blue background colour and changing the label colour to be black. This fits in line with the brand refresh.
- Softer corners to compliment the new brand marker.
Updates to the Maersk light and dark themes to support the ALL THE WAY brand refresh will be shipped in Q2 2025 with no breaking changes.
There will be an automatic update for Figma MDS:UI and developers will get this as a MDS v2 minor update.
In addition to supporting ALL THE WAY brand refresh, in Q1 2025 the MDS aim to ship an update to the Maersk font which includes:
- A larger difference between O and 0
- A new slash-0
- An updated Ø
- An updated 8, in smaller font sizes 8 and B could look similar
- Removes confusion between i, l and 1.
